Dr. Weinreb is Distinguished Professor of Ophthalmology and Director of the Hamilton Glaucoma Center at the Unviersity of California, San Diego in La Jolla, California. . A graduate of the Harvard Medical School, he trained in ophthalmology and glaucoma at the University of California, San Francisco. At the Hamilton Glaucoma Center, he directs an interdisciplinary research team of molecular and cell biologists, physicists, engineers, and psychologists to focus their expertise on glaucoma pathophysiology, diagnosis, medical treatment and surgery. The post-doctoral Fellows he has trained in glaucoma hold prestigious academic and leadership positions thoughout the world.

During the past 25 years, Dr. Weinreb has made important contributions in diverse areas including clinical examination of the optic nerve and nerve fiber layer, clinical psychophysical testing of glaucoma with short wavelength (blue-on-yellow) visual fields, basic cell and molecular biology of the aqueous humor outflow pathways of the eye and glaucoma surgery. Several of the novel instruments that he has developed for diagnosing and monitoring glaucoma are being used throughout the world in clinical practice and clinical investigation. Dr. Weinreb serves on 15 Editorial Boards, and has authored more than 1000 scientific publications and abstracts. He is President-Elect of the American Glaucoma Society (AGS), past President of the Association of International Glaucoma Societies (AIGS), and past President of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO).
