COVID 19 – A Message from Elena Sturman, President and CEO of The Glaucoma Foundation

  • April 1, 2020

During this health crisis, we want to stay in touch. Here’s some helpful information from the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

· When a sick person coughs or talks, virus particles can spray into another’s face. While you are most likely to inhale those droplets through your mouth or nose, they can also enter through your eyes.

· You can also become infected by touching something that has the virus on it and then touching your eyes.

· If you wear contact lenses, switch to glasses for a while. Contact lens wearers touch their eyes more than the average person.

· Limiting contact between doctors and patients is key. Doctors are being urged not to see patients except for urgent or emergency care.

· Stock up on your medications, so you’ll have enough to get by if you are quarantined or hospitalized.

· Avoid rubbing your eyes. If you feel an urge to itch or rub your eye or even to adjust your glasses, use a tissue instead of your finger. If you must touch your eyes for any reason, wash your hands first with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.

Our thoughts are with all of you. Stay healthy while hunkering down at home.
