Dear Readers,

The Glaucoma Foundation’s busy spring season has ended on a particularly exciting and successful note.

I’m delighted to share with you the news that we recently received a major new pledge commitment of $1 million dollars from Barry S. Friedberg, a TGF Board Member since 2009 and active supporter of TGF’s work. We are most grateful for Mr. Friedberg’s ongoing support.

This latest gift will help accelerate cutting edge research funded by TGF in support of our mission to find a cure for glaucoma and preserve vision for future generations.

“I’m committed to moving the ball forward in the fight against this devastating disease,” says Mr. Friedberg. “As a longtime glaucoma patient myself, I’m personally invested in saving sight and improving lives.”

Then, on May 30th, as you will read in this issue, in conjunction with Pinnacle Meetings and Events, TGF held its third medical symposium offering accredited continuing education to ophthalmologists and optometrists across the country. The Glaucoma Foundation is the only foundation that brings optometrists and ophthalmologists together at the same event both as presenters and learners.

Some 70 eye-care professionals joined us in person at the New York City Bar Association for a day of presentations by experts from such institutions as Columbia U., UC San Diego, SUNY College of Optometry, Mount Sinai, and Johns Hopkins. Another 128 attended the symposium on Zoom.

I thank our partners for supporting this project: Alcon, Bausch & Lomb, Théa Pharma, Sight Sciences, Ora, Patricia Hill, Kenneth Mortenson, iCare, Heidelberg Engineering and Delta Gamma. Very special thanks as well to our three Symposium co-chairs: Murray Fingeret, OD, Louis R. Pasquale, MD, FARVO, and John Berdahl, MD.

You can access the entire symposium on YouTube or via our website. Also on YouTube will be the last webinar of this season. On August 5th, Dr. Jeffrey Goldberg, MD, PhD of Stanford University will talk about advances in the clinical trials being done with glaucoma patients, at Stanford and elsewhere, that are beginning to show positive signals of vision protection and enhancement in patients.

We hope you’ll join us. We wish all our readers a very good summer and thank all of you for your ongoing support that makes our work possible.

Sincerely,

Elena Sturman
